REFORM UK has pledged not to raise Thurrock Council tax until the Government scraps Thurrock‘s debt. Over a four-year period from 2020/21 Council Tax has gone up by 53%. The Conservative Government added an interest rate penalty onto the debt repayments, which costs Thurrock taxpayers £36.8m a year claims Reform.
Reform UK, Thurrock Spokesman said: “Thurrock Council is in hundreds of millions of pounds worth of debt. Both Labour and the Conservatives think it’s Thurrock’s residents that should foot the bill for the financial disaster that’s engulfed the Council. Last year, amidst a cost of living crisis, the Conservatives imposed an above-inflation rise in our Council Tax and the Labour Party is set to do the same this year.
“Thurrock’s debt was incurred through no fault of Thurrock’s residents so unless the government write off the debt, a Reform-run Thurrock Council would not raise Council Tax by a single penny. Working-class families deserve a Council that’s on their side, not a Council that shakes them down for all their worth at every available opportunity.
“If you elect Reform UK, we will not increase your Council Tax until this payday lender scheme is ended by the Labour Government. No matter the threats the Government throw at us, we will not break our promise to you!
“We will work with the authorities to ensure as much money is reclaimed and those responsible are brought to justice, ideally facing prison sentences.”
More empty clickbaiting words designed to win votes. If it were that easy, if it could just be written off, just because someone asked for it, do you not think it would have been already. Thurrock also aren’t the only council in debt up to their eyeballs, and whom have been penalised. If their debt were written off, what about every other council facing similar issues. Either present an actual solution, an actual strategy that solves an issue from start to finish, or stop talking nonsense and assuming we’re all simple minded fools who can’t see past next week.
