Planning a family beach holiday is fun and exciting, but with so many options in Europe to choose from, how do you know which is best?

If you want stunning shorelines, warm temperatures and bustling coastal towns with tasty food and hospitable people, then one of the following destinations may be perfect for you.

Algarve, Portugal

The Algarve was named the world’s leading beach destination in 2024. Boasting a Mediterranean climate, beautiful sandy shores and plenty of sunshine, it’s easy to see why.

Tourist hotspots, including Carvoeiro and Albufeira, provide easy access to many family-friendly attractions in the region, such as the Aquashow Waterpark and Zoomarine. Both towns have a range of accommodation options to suit all budgets, from five-star resorts to budget self-catering apartments with shared pools, so there is something for everyone here.

However, if you fancy a quieter, picturesque town, opt for Salema – a traditional fishing village located only a 20-minute drive from the hustle and bustle of Lagos. It provides the ideal location for peace and quiet, while only being a stone’s throw away from the action.

Crete, Greece

The largest of the Greek Islands, Crete has an average temperature of 27 degrees in the summer months and 9-12 hours of daily sunshine. Greece is known for its welcoming and hospitable people. A 2024 study by Remitly determined it was the second most friendly nation in the world, making it an ideal destination for your next beach holiday

Elafonisi Beach, famous for its pink sand and turquoise waters, is a must for your itinerary. The warm, shallow sea is great for children to swim and snorkel in.

Crete is also steeped in history and has plenty of ancient ruins to explore. Knossos Palace and the ancient city of Aptera are well worth a visit, especially if your children are into Greek mythology.

Costa del Sol, Spain

The beaches along the Costa del Sol coastline have many amenities which are perfect for families. Playa de la Malagueta and Playa de los Alamos both offer children’s play areas and water sports activities, such as jet skis and pedal boats. With loads of entertainment for the children, you can relax on a sun lounger or enjoy some tapas at a beach bar.

For another fun excursion, why not hire a boat or join a tour to spot dolphins and whales in their natural habitat? It’ll be a bucket-list moment for all!

Other attractions in the area include Aventura Amazonia, an adventure course in the treetops, Biopark Zoo and Sealife Aquarium.

Sardinia, Italy

Sardinia is known for its rugged mountainous backdrop and amazing beaches, dotted with private coves.

Gallura and Costa Rei are favourites among families. Both have stunning shorelines and plenty of activities; why not give paddleboarding a go or snorkel with the fish and marvel at the beautiful coral reefs?

You’ll also have the chance to sample Sardinia’s delicious cuisine. Fregola, porceddu and bottarga are traditional local dishes and delicacies that you should definitely try.
