BASILDON Council has reaffirmed its commitment to reducing the use and cost of temporary accommodation, while doing everything possible to ensure that homeless families are not placed in hotels or B&Bs.

During a recent visit to meet Basildon families currently living in temporary hotel and B&B accommodation, Council Leader Cllr Gavin Callaghan and Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Housing and Infrastructure, Cllr Adele Brown, spoke with residents about their experiences and the challenges they face. The visit formed part of the Council’s ongoing efforts to support families and help them move into more suitable homes.

Cllr Gavin Callaghan said:

“It is heart-breaking to meet families who, through no fault of their own, find themselves sharing a single room in a hotel or B&B. Their stories strengthen our determination to secure more properties and end the need for this type of accommodation.

“Although the number of households in temporary accommodation is falling every day, we will not rest until we have fully addressed this issue – one that councils across the country are struggling with.

“I would like to thank our officers for their tireless work, dedication, and the compassion they show in supporting local families.

“We are hopeful that some of these families will be settled into permanent homes in the borough in time for Christmas.”
