BASILDON Council is inviting residents to roll up their sleeves and take part in the 2026 Great British Spring Clean, the nation’s biggest mass-action environmental campaign.
Running from 13 to 29 March, the campaign brings together hundreds of thousands of volunteers from across the country to help clear litter from streets, parks and public spaces. Basildon Council is calling on its fantastic community litter pickers and anyone who wants to make a difference to get involved this year.

Volunteers who take part locally will be provided with all the equipment they need to carry out litter picks safely and effectively.
Each year, more than 400,000 volunteers take part in the Great British Spring Clean, removing litter from communities across the UK. Since the campaign began in 2016, millions of dedicated Litter Heroes have pledged to show their love for where they live by collecting more than 4.5 million bags of litter.
The campaign offers a great opportunity for residents, families, community groups and local organisations to come together and help keep Basildon clean and welcoming for everyone.
Cllr Aidan McGurran, Cabinet Member for Environment & Leisure, said:
“We are incredibly grateful for the dedication our community litter pickers show throughout the year. Their efforts make a real difference in keeping our neighbourhoods clean, safe and welcoming for everyone.
“With the Great British Spring Clean now underway, I would encourage our local litter pickers, as well as anyone who would like to get involved for the first time to join the hundreds of thousands of volunteers across the country taking part in this fantastic campaign.
“Here in Basildon, supporting the Great British Spring Clean also helps deliver one of our 6 in 26 priorities – ‘Make our borough cleaner’. By working together, we can take pride in our local area and create a cleaner environment for our communities.”
Residents interested in organising or joining a litter pick as part of the campaign can contact the council’s recycling team at [email protected] to find out more and request equipment.
