INDEPENDENT candidate for Aveley and Uplands, rev Alan Field has expressed his horror at a report which highlights the hazards beneath the surface on land in Aveley.

On his website, www.alanfield.org he writes:

“Benzo(a)pyrene is a Class 1 carcinogen [Cancer forming material] with the ability to alter DNA and cause mutations.

“In the Ground Investigation Report [Ref: GE5541, April 2008] by Geo-Environmental Services for Ardent Consulting Engineers on behalf of Barratt Homes, there were seven separate locations with levels up to 70 times the (GAC) limit of 1.12 mg/kg found.

“The highest one is 79.4 mg/kg and is only 0.3 metres (about 1 foot) below the surface! The second highest 57.1 mg/kg is over 50 times the limit and is very close to the Martin Road children’s play area. It is only 1.0M below the surface!

“There are a number of locations with Arsenic above the limit of 20 mg/kg, with the highest also close to the play area and 1.0M (about 3 feet) below the surface with a concentration of over 5,000 mg/kg (that’s 250 times the limit)!

“If any digging is done in dry conditions, a light breeze could carry these toxic materials over ALL of Aveley (the Village, Kenningtons, even to Watts Wood and Uplands)!

“There are Heavy Metals (Chromium) and other contaminants like Lead and Zinc, well over the limit (some hundreds of times over)! Who would want to work on this site (the report says use protective clothing)? Who would want to buy or rent a home there?

“My question to ALL the residents of Aveley & Uplands is WHY have we NOT been clearly told of this before?

WHY has Thurrock Council allowed planning permission (given by the TTGDC) to stand knowing of this report? In fact they changed their minds against expert Consultants advice and years opposing it.(see below)!

The following is an excerpt from the minutes of a Thurrock Council meeting held in 2009:

PLANNING COMMITTEE – 30 March 2009 SUPPLEMENTAL REPORT. Aveley Village Extension south of Aveley Bypass, Aveley Planning application 09/00091/TTGOUT

The Council’s Strategic Planning Team has advised that the .. ‘Aveley Bypass site’ .. was rejected by Full Council in November 2007. The site was promoted again by the developer during the Preferred Options Consultation of the Local Development Framework (LDF) and has been assessed by consultants. The consultants have rejected the site as a potential housing site.

The main reason for both refusals is that the Aveley Village Extension lies ..in the Green Belt and is not in conformity with Adopted Regional Spatial Strategy. Policy ETG2 of the adopted Regional Spatial Strategy promotes development within the Thurrock Urban Area, which is south of the A13. The Aveley Bypass Site is not within the Thurrock Urban Area!

  1. No houses should be built on this site at all, especially now. The best thing that can happen is for the developer to leave the land open or for EWT or the council to try and buy the land back.

  2. on chafford hundred they just dug it all up and dumped it in a heap along devonshire rd or buried it under the primary school playing field.

  3. This is appalling, doesnt this just show how greed comes first before human life, one thing i can say about Alan is he does care so much for his community and is not scared to say how it is, thank goodness for that, these poor Aveley residents are constantly having to fight against one thing or another but when it comes down to it they all show community spirit and get things done, pity our Belhus residents dont seem to have the same pride. Good luck Alan in your Election.

  4. Mr Field the council have just allowed 1100 houses in the chemical site in grays  in the LDF . I believe years ago their was an explosion there and what is in the ground  do  they care that once these houses are built children will play out on the very ground that is contaminated playing football ,skipping ,hop scotch , thinking they are safe mums cooking barbecues in the garden all on an old chemical site are they safe?  If their was an explosion would the councillors be response able .?Also because the conservative had their electoral offices this was read out in full  council january 2010 to see if the conservatives had a personnel or prejudicial interest only one left the room  I wonder how this houses was allowed to be put in the LDF who sat on the LDF Group Mr Field I hope you win you are a man of the people for the people
