ON A pleasant Friday afternoon, William Edwards track and field team performed very well in the first “county” round of the English Schools team champs.
The boys came second in the national finals and looked in good fettle again, against some fine oppositon from schools such as Mayflower in Billericay and Cornelius Vermuyden in Canvey.
A full list of results will appear later.

Whoopie do!
A pity Willy Eds don’t also focus on Cricket…our summer National sport!Instead of concentrating soley on Athletics and elite individuals, wouldn’t it be nice to encourage team games and ‘sport for all’ particularly in Olympic year?
William Edwards actually focus on many team sports and do not concentrate soley on Athletics. You might be interested to know that they have, cricket football, rugby, basketball, badminton etc as well as athletics. As for concentrating on elite individuals as a school they focus on every individual however with that in mind the so called elite should be encouraged. They after all put in a lot of hard work to be the standard that they are and are not out causing trouble night after night on the streets of Thurrock . All sports in this borough should be encouraged not just one in particular! If you’d like to go along and watch the cricket match next week I am sure they would welcome the support.
Oh dear, I appear to have struck a nerve ‘thurrock resident’! Correct me if I’m wrong, but aren’t football, basketball and rugby winter sports? I rest my case m’Lord, no further questions!
I’m not wishing to fall out, but just raising the point that Willy Eds do not promote the team game of cricket during the summer. Alas Thurrock in general is not renowned for school cricket in comparison with other areas of Essex.
I’ll be there next week…weather permitting of course and if this game’s rained off, hopefully there will be many more opportunities this summer to hear leather on willow…but sadly, I doubt it!
Such a shame some people can’t just applaud children who get off there backside and take part in any sport. My daughter who is in the William Edwards video above trains hard 4 times a week to achieve the level she is at. This is a sport which covers 12 months of the year (cross country in the winter months).
Why log on and watch the video if your not in interested in Athletics!!! Some of us parents are very proud of our children taken part.
Athletics / Cross country running is also for both sexes and can also be run as a team , how many girl Cricket team do you know of ????? or should my daughter eat dougnuts and watch ???
Hey mayalou, the England women’s cricket team are world champions! I rest my case…no further questions m’Lord, your witness!
Surely, you agree Athletics is an individuals sport? The big kid always wins, irrespective of ability anyway!
I pity your daughter training 4 times a week…she should get a life and have varied interests at her age! Then again it must be hard to ignore her pushy parents trying to live their fantasies through their children!
Athlete’s in my extensive experience in sport are crashing bores! No I don’t want to know your PB or if you are or are not a member of the 3 As!
My advice…run faster next time or throw it further or jump longer…job done!
I cannot believe what I have just read. ECM seems a very bigoted person. This extensive experience of athlete’s cannot be very extensive. Who said that Mayalou is a pushy parent, there is no indication in her log? Could it be that her child actually enjoys althletics and your child has not come up to your expectations so you have to attack others?
William Edwards promotes all sports, but it could be that cricket is not fast enough for most children in this day and age.
Good luck to all the children whatever sport they take up. Enjoy it , encourage each other whether it is a team game or an individual event and you have the advantage of being fit and healthy as well.
Well said ‘Sports Fan’, particularly your last paragraph, which I could not agree with more!
A pity my banter and humour was not appreciated! Then again there’s not a lot of fun around these days, particularly in schools…which have sadly become ‘exam factoires’ solely concerned with ‘qualifications’!
How sad, particularly in Olympic year!
