BEING loan shark savvy proved profitable for Mrs Valerie Doyle of Linford this week after she won a £100 shopping voucher.

In April, Thurrock Council in partnership with the England Illegal Money Lending Team and a number of local partners ran a week-long campaign to raise awareness of the dangers of loan sharks

Part of the presentation was asking people to fill in a loan shark questionnaire and, after getting all the answers right, Mrs Doyle’s entry was chosen at random from all those who had correctly answered the questions.

Over a hundred people entered the quiz.

Cllr Angie Gaywood, portfolio holder for public protection said: “Congratulations to Mrs Doyle.

“It is important finding out what people know about loan sharks because it gives us an idea of how the awareness-raising work we do is progressing.

“Loan sharks are criminals who prey on vulnerable people and people should never approach them for help, no matter what their situation it will not be worth it in the long run.”

She added: “It is important people know how to get help when financial worries become a problem and that going to a loan shark should not be an option.

“I am pleased it seems so many people know about the issues, but we will continue to send out the message: Don’t get bitten by a loan shark – get confidential help and advice from Stop Loan Sharks on 0300 555 2222.
