FOLLOWING Unite’s six-month campaign for recognition at London Gateway, owner Dubai Ports World (DPW) has opened the door for the union to recruit dockworkers at the new port, creating a route to eventual union recognition.
“We have signed a memorandum of understanding with the company which gives us access to workers at the port,” said Vince Passfield, deputy regional secretary of Unite’s London & Eastern region. “We are cautiously optimistic as the campaign enters this new phase.”
Thanks to the agreement with DPW, Unite officials are now able to concentrate on a recruitment drive at the port. The goal is to grow membership to a level that secures recognition for Unite.
The region’s lead officer for the docks sector, Jane Jeffery added, “Many of these dockworkers may have little or no experience of the long term benefits that union membership brings. This is particularly relevant within the docks where this union has a long and proud history of representing workers’ interests in terms of health and safety improvements, as well as securing improved terms and conditions.”
DPW is developing London Gateway to handle 3.5 million containers a year. It opened to the first ship in November. Unite and its predecessors have organised British dockers for more than a century. It has negotiating rights at all established major container ports in the UK.
Labour parliamentary candidate for South Basildon and East Thurrock Mike Le-Surf said: “I am delighted that DP World has opened the door to Unite. As a firm supporter of union recognition in the workplace I hope that this is the beginning of a process that will support workers at the port for many years to come and bring more local jobs to the area.”

I would rather pay a retainer to a solicitor to look after my employment affairs than I would pay a bunch of parasites like Unite. They are run by a committed communist and are the Labour party’s biggest pay master. That tells you all you need to know about the unite sponsored smurf and lisping Ed. When the communist says jump, they ask how high. I hope DP world tugs at their leash the moment they step out of line. Give them an inch and they’ll shut the place down.
alf garnet has spoken.
You’re a derisory little socialist rocket1. The best you can come up with is to call me alf garnet. I’m torn to shreds. Now go back to collecting your benefits or picking up your taxpayer funded salary. I’m sure it’s one of the other as you’re probably not capable of surviving in the real world.
you know nothing about me and your comments prove what an idiot you are.
I have an opinion on unions rocket1 and that opinion is that they are largely ineffectual in the modern era at getting anything for their members. They only appear to have any success when the country has a Labour government. The reason behind that is obvious.
They have done nothing to improve people’s working lives over the last five years which is self evident from Labour stance that people aren’t getting pay rises and that their working conditions are deteriorating.
They have no power over the private sector and never will have. The public sector is being cut back and thus they are losing members and therefore income. The only reason they are at DP world is to boost their own coffers. Employee’s will be throwuing money down the drain if they think they will gain anything from what is essentially a left wing activist movement with no interest in employee welfare and every interest in controlling the Labour party, slagging off the current government and sending their rent a mobs round the country bullying people.
You on the other hand don’t appear to have any opinion on unite. Your sole reason for posting on here is to personally insult and attack me. And you call me stupid.
[1]i’m not a socialist,[2] the only benefit i have ever claimed is child support[3] i work in the private sector[4]i am the only employee who is not a union member[5]i still think you are ranting like alf garnet.[6]happy new year.
I’m an astronaut and a direct descendant of Karl Marx. Funny how life turns out.
