TILBURY councillor Steve Liddiard was elected mayor of Thurrock with the help of six abstentions from UKIP councillors. The vote took place at the annual council meeting in the council chambers.

There was much anticipation as to how the six UKIP councillors would vote.

It appears that the two years of appeasement and “catch more with honey than vinegar” approach by Labour leader John Kent worked better than the constant barracking approach by his Conservative colleagues. The constant barracking continued throughout the meeting as Tory councillor Mark Coxshall verbally hectored UKIP throughout the meeting, to what looked like the discomfort of his Tory colleagues more than UKIP.

Councillor Liddiard was elected mayor and Belhus councillor, Sue Gray was elected deputy mayor.

  1. Another observation from your footage it’s quite obvious who is running the Tory group at Thurrock and it’s not Rob Gledhill

  2. What on earth was Councillor Coxshall up to? What an embarrassment to the Tory group that man is!

  3. Did you think Robert Ray ex-NF member and party organiser was going to vote in favour of having a black Mayor

  4. Mark CoxShall’s behavior at last nights AGM was laughable,
He has made the Tories the laughingstock of Thurrock and as for you Jackie Doyle Price I sincerely hope he will run your campaign next year and if he does you will be on your way back to Sheffield like S*** through a goose. In fact when I think about it labour will put Mark Coxshall on the pay roll, you and him both are a disgrace,Especially with his grovelling tactics around UKIP

  5. Congratulations to Sue Gray on becoming Deputy Mayor, well deserved and it could not have gone to anyone else better. Really pleased for her!
