THURROCK Council has secured a £187,000 grant from Sport England’s Community Sport Activation Fund for a three-year project based in and around Tilbury.
Active Tilbury is a community development scheme aimed at increasing participation in free sports activities for those aged 14 years and over and living in the two Tilbury local council wards which includes Thurrock Park.
It includes training and volunteering opportunities: transferable skills; confidence; self-esteem; improved health, as well as formal sports coaching qualifications.
The first are training sessions with the Thurrock Hornets Basketball Club being held every Monday in school term time at the Gateway Academy’s sports hall between 6pm and 8pm.
Other activities are being planned for early in the New Year and will include football, multi sports and martial arts.
