THE CLEAR-up rate for burglary in Thurrock continues to be very very low.

A freedom of information request to Essex Police revealed the following.

Between April and September there were 622 burglaries in Thurrock (both dwelling and other). Only 73 were "sanctioned detections", i.e: solved.

This means that Thurrock continues to hover around the 11%.

Some may say that is a consequence of the cuts. That is until you take a look at other forces.

Edinburgh police were greatly concerned that there clear up rates had "plummeted to 20%" with many pointing to their recent re-organisation. A re-model of the local police plan saw clear up rates for burglary rise to over 40%.

Her Majesty’s Inspectorate of Constabulary recently criticised Essex Police for its low rating on "Investigatory powers"

YT took the matter to the chief constable of Essex, Steven Kavanagh and asked him whether he thought their was something "systematically wrong" with Essex Police.

The chief said: "No. We have already said that we are not happy with our performance on a number of levels and this is being addressed."
