AN opinion poll for the constituency of South Basildon and East Thurrock by Lord Ashcroft has given Conservative MP, Stephen Metcalfe a 6% lead for the May 7th General Election.
The poll published today (Thursday Feb 19th) put the sitting MP on 35%, UKIP’s Ian Luder on 29% and Labour’s Mike Le-Surf on 28%.
The Lib-Dems and Greens are both neck and neck on 3%.
Mr Metcalfe said: "I am of course encouraged by the poll, but by no means complacent.
"A single poll is just that, a snap shot. What I will continue to do between now and the election is to work hard to show that it is only through having a Conservative MP and a Conservative government that we can secure our countries long term future".
Labour candidate, Mike Le-Surf said: "This will be one of the most unpredictable general elections ever held so I am not surprised that this polling is so close although figures go up and down quite regularly.
"We continue to get a positive response and plenty of support on the doorstep and once the party manifestos are out residents will be able to look at the policy detail and make their voting decisions."
