THE chamber at Thurrock Council was busy with people from the nearby six high-rise tower blocks on Tuesday (2 June), discussing the future of their homes.
Over the past few months Thurrock Council has been seeking local people’s views on proposals ranging from upgrading the blocks to knocking them down and replacing with low-rise and other homes.
In a consultation between March and May, the majority of people living in the high-rises in south Grays said they believed demolishing all or half the blocks was the best option.
Tuesday’s meeting was chaired by Council Leader and Grays councillor, John Kent, who said afterwards: “It was a good meeting with everyone having a chance to air their views.
“Clearly some of the 60 or so people had real concerns, and in most cases officers could provide answers, but on occasion more information is needed.
“But those that came were all well informed and it was a really good-natured discussion.”
Cllr Kent added: “I was able to assure people that no decisions had yet been taken and all the information gathered over recent months – and on the night – would be made available before cabinet looked at the situation, probably in July or perhaps September.
“We also agreed we should all meet again before that cabinet and before any decision is made.
“I’d also like to say I fully understand the various points of view being put forward. How would I feel if I was being told the home I’d lived in for years was to be demolished – on the other hand would I like to be offered a brand new home with all the mod-cons and energy efficiencies?
“It is a dilemma and a decision we will not take lightly.”
