THE leader of Thurrock Council rose on the floor of the chamber to, once again, make his position clear on the future of the Thameside Theatre.

He stressed that “Theatre provision will remain in Grays to sustain a night time economy and a new provision to replace what we have should be built.

“The Thameside will not be closed until a replacement is agreed.”

Cllr Gledhill goes on to make clear why he has used the term “Theatre provision”.

Cllr Rob Gledhill claimed that the recent controversy surrounds “one line taken out of context” and slammed Your Thurrock for “inaccurate reporting”.

The line he referred to can be found on the agenda of the Thurrock Cabinet, which met on Wednesday January 11th.

The line is part of an item titled Draft General Fund Budget 2017/18.

The Conservative cabinet recommended “That Cabinet agree to the proposals set out in this report to achieve a balanced budget.”

Appendix 1 included a document titled “Savings Proposals”. Included among the proposals was the following:
Proposal: “Further letting income-Thameside Centre (rent and service charge).
Saving for 2017/18: £30,000.
Comment: Building likely to close in following year. Letting income potentially limited by nature of space.
