More power to cops to prosecute

POLICE officers in Thurrock will be given greater powers to prosecute without involving the Crown Prosecution Service.

Cops will be able to take a string of new offences through the courts if the defendant admits the crime.

These include some criminal damage cases, driving without due care and attention and a number of alcohol and public order offences.

It is hoped the changes, introduced by the Home Office, will cut bureaucracy and speed up the court process.
