Some say the life of a publican is a tough one these days. Drink driving laws and the recently introduced smoking ban has meant that a lot of British pubs have seen a dramatic loss of business and in some cases have had to close.
So take a dilapidated pub that’s been closed for some time, be known locally as a battlecruiser and have opposition only yards away and it’s not exactly the recipe for success.
However 3 years later and The White Hart in South Grays proudly boast not one but three awards from the Campaign for Real Ale, a solid reputation and a growing clientele.
Ok there’s no food but there is a good atmosphere and the pub is popular when premier league football is on the multiple screens.
Now all this is down to the likeable husband and wife team of Chris and Benice Ryley who in a previous life managed the Grays Athletic bar. In fact a good proportion of football fans will still make the short journey from the Rec to The White Hart.
Yourthurrock popped in for a pint and chatted to Chris and Benice to find out about their recipe for success.
