Mavis McLoughlin, a volunteer for St Luke’s Hospice, was invited to Downing Street by Angela Smith, MP for Basildon and East Thurrock, to meet the Prime Minister at his ‘Community Heroes’ event.
Stanford le Hope resident Mavis told the Prime Minister and his wife, Sarah Brown about the work of volunteers to support the hospice, based in Basildon.
Angela said: “When the Prime Minister asked me to choose a ‘community hero’ from my constituency, I immediately thought of Mavis, as she works tirelessly all year round for St Luke’s Hospice. She does so much to support the Hospice through volunteering and fundraising, and encourages others to get involved. She represents the spirit of so many selfless local residents who are our unsung heroes. I know the Hospice currently need more volunteers, so if you have some time to spare, I know they would put them to good use.”
The Prime Minister Gordon Brown spoke at the event of how those attending are putting the “community spirit” back into local communities, improving the lives of others through their example.
