Thugs Beat Couple After Cinema Dispute

Detectives are appealing for witnesses to a serious assault outside a cinema at Lakeside Shopping Centre.

The attack happened outside Vue Cinema on The Boardwalk shortly after midnight on Saturday, October 24. A couple had been watching the 10:30pm screening on Friday, October 23 of Saw VI and had had a verbal altercation with another couple sitting behind them during the film.

After the movie, they left to return to their car when were surrounded by a small group of men and women.

The men took off their belts and used them as whips to strike the male victim. This left the 41-year-old man from Grays with severe injuries which required two days’ hospital treatment after a metal plate was inserted into his arm. The female victim also sustained injuries, but of a less severe nature.

Investigating Officer, Dc Nick Phillips, said: “We’re looking for any audience members who may have seen the altercation inside the cinema and also anyone who may have seen the fight outside. This is a highly unusual event and so would have caught the attention of passers-by. The attack was a sustained one and has shocked us.”

All the assailants are described as black. One man was wearing a black T-shirt and black jeans while another was wearing a striped T-shirt. One of the women was wearing a brown leather jacket.
Anyone with information in connection with this assault is urged to contact detectives at Grays police station on 0300 333 4444.
