Truancy Purge Continues

A mother from Purfleet was sentenced by Grays Magistrates on Thursday (5 November) for failing to ensure her child attended school regularly.

She cannot be named on legal grounds.

The mother with a 15 year old daughter pleaded guilty to failing to ensure her daughter attended school regularly and punctually.

She received a Community Order and was sentenced to 60 hours unpaid work and ordered to pay prosecution costs of £100.

She was also advised that this was an extremely serious offence and if she appeared before them again the result would be much more severe.

Cllr Sue MacPherson, Thurrock Council’s Cabinet member for Children’s Services, said: “Every stage of a child’s education is very important and crucial to their future.

“The council will not at any time condone parent’s poor attitudes towards their children’s education and will do everything it can, using statutory rights to continue to improve school attendance in Thurrock.”
