Schools Contract “Scandal” Set to Cost Another Million

THE PROCUREMENT “scandal” behind the building and refurbishment of Ockendon, Tudor Court and West Thurrock primary schools could cost the Thurrock taxpayer millions in EU fines as the council is alleged to have failed to have followed the correct tendering procedures.

The council is now set to pay out between £500,000 and a £1 million in order to have the work completed.

Haymills Contractors Limited went into administration in August leaving the Ockendon pupils and staff having to negotiate their way around bricks, rubble and fences as the building project lay incomplete.

Vinci UK have now taken over the books of Haymills and have offered to complete the work at a cost of, we understand, between £500,000 and £1 million.

Thurrock Council’s Cabinet will meet in secret session tonight to discuss the offer.

In November 2008, Leader of Thurrock Council Terry Hipsey is alleged to have had a meeting with Essex Police Fraud Squad due to his concerns over issues relating to this matter.

Below is a film, YourThurrock made in September regarding what happened.
