Ryman League Division One North
Saturday 5th December 2009
Tilbury welcomed Maldon Town to Chadfield’s on a wet and windy Saturday afternoon. The Dockers needing a win to keep the pressure on the top sides within the League look to the front partnership of Manlee Brown and Kayan Kalipha to supply the fire power up front.
Rickie Hayles back in the starting eleven after missing the trip to Brentwood Town last Saturday due to suspension, also Chris Taylor back from injury is named on the bench.
The first period of the game saw few chances at either end, the Dockers first to show their intent, a good through ball by Daniel Smith into the path of Kalipha whose effort went inches past the post.
In the 25th minute, Rickie Hayles went on a driving run down the left to the by-line, whips the ball across goal to the feet of Brown – 7 yards from goal, Brown lays the ball into the path of Bradley Barnes whose effort looks goal bound before Maldon’s keeper Darren Smith goes low to palm the ball out for a Dockers corner.
The visitors looking to break the deadlock, Maldon’s bustling defender Dan Rowell on a blistering run breaks free of the chasing Tilbury defence and from 20 yards unleashes a fine effort which leaves Andy Hall Tilbury’s No 1 make a fine save out for a corner.
Into injury time and Tilbury continue to put pressure on the Blues defence, a rash challenge on the edge of the box sets-up a free kick for the Dockers, Joe Keith the taker – as he bends the ball around the wall and into the bottom corner of the net, 1-0 to the Dockers.
Into the second half – as the players step out onto a boggy pitch with the rain still lashing down sees Tilbury make their first substitute – The injured Bradley Barnes making way for Nathan Gordon.
15 minutes into the second period and The Dockers pick-up the pace where they left off in the first period, a good move down the left resulted in the ball swung across goal and from just inside the box saw Gordon hit his shot on the half-volley, the ball hitting the ground first and looked to sneak over the head of the Maldon’s goalkeeper who does well to make a finger tip save as the ball goes over the bar and out for another Tilbury corner.
61st minute and the corner whipped in by Tilbury’s skipper Jamie Wallace onto the head of Manlee Brown and from close range glides the ball into the net to make the score 2-0 to the Dockers.
The Dockers make their second Donny Barnard on for Chris Taylor.
The Dockers took control of the game and from another set piece this time from Joe Keith sees Hayles effort blocked off the line.
The Dockers make their third and final substitute, Kayan Kalipha looks to have taken a knock as he makes way for Chris Stowe.
Maldon pick up the pace and create an opportunity, the impressive Dan Rowell sets off towards the Dockers goal and manages to get within the box – his skill and determination is matched only by the physical presence of Glen Golby who swipes the ball away just as Rowell was to unleash his shot.
The visitors continue to press down on the Tilbury’s defence, however, the Dockers defence staying united and strong prove to be more than a match for any Maldon threat.
Graham Chester’s Tilbury men gave a fine all round performance which allows his team to keep the pressure on the top five within the league. Three points on saturday placed the Dockers in 6th place – 4 points from a top 3 position. The Dockers league form at home has been impressive this season, only losing one game all season which was the opener against Potters Bar back in August.
