Romford 3 East Thurrock Utd 2
Mike Jones Reports
The neutral studying form before today’s rain sodden fixture at Aveley would have without doubt favoured the away side. John Coventry’s men are second only to Lowestoft in the form league with 5 wins from 6 whilst Romford were busy propping up the table. But that’s the whole point of a football match , anything can happen.
East Thurrock were organised, passed beautifully and totally dominated the second half but failed to score and squandered numerous chances. Goals flew in the first half and a draw was a fair assessment at half time . Then the rain began to fall and East Thurrock began to show their class.
I haven’t seen Romford play since 1967 and in those intervening years their wonderful Brooklands ground was lost , the team collapsed and though reformed in the last twenty years or so they have been homeless. This week brings hope with Havering council agreeing planning permission just to the west of Romford.
We wish the fledgling club every success. They seem to have e a solid fan base and what’s this a familiar face in the side ! A certain Toran Senghore who made the odd brief appearance for Grays Athletic. And if they put in a performance like this they will keep the fans and get their wish. It wasn’t pretty but gritty and they defended well and with just 5 minutes to go sub M Heed powered the ball into the back of the net. There only attack of the second half.
East Thurrock will learn from this result. Solid ,attractive but just needing that finishing touch
