TO THOSE of us at a certain age, the abiding memory and image of Derek Redmond is the site of him being helped around the track by his father at the 1992 Barcelona Olympics after he had ruptured his hamstring during the 400 metre semi-final.
Although he has been world champion (4 x 400 1991) there was such a message in that fateful day. Derek had turned the most disappointing day of his life into a message of hope, determination and fortitude.
Derek came to Ormiston Park as part of the Aim Higher programme. The students were fascinated as he took them through the legendary 1991 relay final. The key was the message of teamwork, self-belief and dedication. It was clear that the students went away inspired.
