Grangewaters Active Day

A special activity day for people with physical and learning needs, their families, carers and friends, has been organised by Thurrock Council’s Grangewaters Outdoor Education team.

The ‘Everybody Active Day’ will take place at Grangewaters Outdoor Education Centre, Buckles Lane, South Ockendon, on Sunday, 16 May – and is the first event of its kind to be held in Thurrock.

The day will be about encouraging those with physical and learning difficulties to take part in sport and outdoor recreation, as well as celebrating the wide range of specialist facilities on offer at Grangewaters. It will also be an opportunity to raise awareness of what services, information and facilities are available within Thurrock and beyond.

People will have an opportunity try out their skills on the climbing wall, have a go on the zipline and high ropes, test their accuracy at archery, or take to the water in a canoe or kayak. There will be a variety of live entertainment shows, including rescue dog displays and performances from Thurrock Youth Orchestra. There will also be an environmental area, which will include farm animals. Refreshments will be available throughout the day.

Adrian Hodges from Grangewaters said: “Here at Grangewaters we have an excellent record of working with people with special needs and disabilities. However, the majority visit us as part of a school or youth group trip, so their parents, carers and friends never have an opportunity to participate in or see how rewarding some of the activities can be. The day will give everyone a chance to have a go at some of the land and water activities available at Grangewaters, as well as find out about other useful services available to them.”

The event starts at 11am and finishes at 4pm. Entry cost is £5 per person, plus an additional cost of £2 for a zipline where required. Any money made from the day will be put towards purchasing new specialist equipment for the centre.

Grangewaters activities are suitable for ages eight to adult. During the Everybody Active Day, there will be fun activities and games on offer for children under the age of eight.
