IT IS twenty years this week since Liz Hosford underwent a kidney transplant that not only saved but transformed her life. Ever since that day, Liz has taken the phrase “Carpe Diem” to the max as every day is a whirlwind of activities and commitments.

Someone needs to bottle Liz’s DNA as she has such unrivalled energy. Professional double bassist, Transplant athlete (winning 130 medals), mother-of-two,

Liz’s mother donated the kidney after Liz suffered renal failure when she was 17.

Liz said: “My mum and dad were tested to see if they could give me a kidney, and mum matched. She and I are living with one kidney each. Her kidney is 66-years-old and still going strong.

“After the operation my attitude to life changed, I appreciate everything and sometimes try to do too much. I am always up for a challenge. I never thought I would get married but 12 years ago I married Adrian in the same church my mum and dad got married in.”

Liz has to take anti-rejection tablets each day and admits she may need another kidney one day.

She added: “With the 20th anniversary of my operation coming up I really want more people in Thurrock to join the donor register.

“I am proof you can live a normal life after a transplant. If you were thinking of joining I would say think about if you are willing to receive an organ then could you be willing to give one?”
