“Moonshine” lights up the Drama Festival
By Lisa Chapman
I have always had a secret fear when I go to see a play I know nothing about that a) I will not understand it and b) I won’t enjoy it. Thankfully tonight I need not have worried about either as The Bovingdon Players breezed their way through this emotional tale of lost and unrequited love, relationships and death set in the seaside town of Ballintra, Southern Ireland.
There was plenty of humour in the script which lifted what could have been some very depressing moments and this was delivered well by the capable cast who all played their parts superbly. I loved the scene at the beginning of the second act when the group were rehearsing A Midsummer Night’s Dream echoing every amateur dramatics groups’ worse nightmare! Hats off to Michael (Sean Chalkwright) who during this scene carried on unfazed after nearly knocking himself out on a bench. What a trooper! There were some very tender moments between McKeever (Mark Waghorn) and Elizabeth (Claire Sharp) which worked well and were believable.
The scenery was brilliantly thought out, especially the church which during the funeral scene looked quite stunning. I was a little disappointed with the scenery changes which slowed the pace down but this was because I was so caught up with the story they just got in the way and bought me back to the theatre and away from Ballintra!
A very entertaining evening! It’s just a shame that there were not more people at the Thameside Theatre to see it!
