SHOCKED students and commuters found themselves unable to park their bikes last week after the cycle sheds at Stanford-le-Hope station mysteriously disappeared.
Local Conservative Councillor Phil Anderson said “I got a call from local residents on Thursday complaining that they now had no-where to lock their bikes. A lot of people cycle to Stanford station, but with no secure parking there was a real risk of theft or damage. I got in contact with C2C rail the same day, who said that the bike sheds had been removed for re-surfacing work.
They admitted that they hadn’t consulted or informed cyclists or put any temporary provision in place. All credit to them – within 48 hours of us raising the issue they had put two temporary bike racks on the car park side, and put up notices explaining to everyone what was going on.”
“I am a keen cyclist myself, so I want to make sure that there are decent facilities for bikes in Thurrock. Cycling is one of the healthiest, greenest, and cheapest ways to get around, and we should be doing everything we can to promote it. As a new councillor you sometimes wonder whether you will really be able to make a difference, so to get action taken so quickly in this case was really encouraging for me!”
