National Grid is advising motorists of a two week road closure in West Thurrock to allow engineers to carry out vital refurbishment work on overhead power lines.
The A1306 in West Thurrock will be closed between 7am and 6pm from Saturday 31 July until Friday 13 August, between the Sainsbury’s and Decathlon roundabouts.
Additional overnight closures will also be in place between 3-4 August, 7-8 August and 11-12 August. All closures have been agreed with the local authorities.
Diversions will be in place during the closures. The alternative route for eastbound traffic will be the B186 West Thurrock Way, A126 West Thurrock Way, Fenner Road, Burghley Road and vice versa for westbound traffic.
Footpaths will remain open except when work is taking place directly overhead, when they may be closed for short periods.
Lakeside shopping centre and other businesses in the area will be open as usual. Access has also been arranged for the Go Kart track and Arena Essex from the east, and to the sports field and the car wash from the west. Local power supplies will not be affected during the work.
National Grid Overhead Line Project Manager Peter Bullen said: “This essential power line upgrade will help ensure people in the South East continue to enjoy a safe and secure electricity supply in future years.
“The road closures and any associated footpath closures will enable us to carry out the work as quickly and safely as possible. We apologise for any inconvenience these closures may cause and we will do our utmost to minimise any disruption.”
Traffic management signs, advanced warning notices and information boards will be posted in the area, and letters have been sent to local residents and businesses explaining the road closure.
The work is being carried out by the Electricity Alliance East, a partnership between National Grid and Balfour Beatty. It forms part of an ongoing refurbishment of the overhead lines between Lakeside, West Thurrock and Littlebrook, which is due to be completed by winter 2010.
