Aveley 3 v 2 Thurrock

Bill Robinson reports from Millfield…….

Aveley 3 Thurrock 2

This was a very entertaining local derby with plenty of passion and goal mouth incidents that must have pleased the Home side more. Listening to the managers post match interviews summed up the game, Alan Kimble said all his players are playing for a blue shirt whereas Hakan Hayrettin said his team picks itself, therefore the determination showed by Aveley enabled them to overcome the visitors.

It was Thurrock that opened the scoring in the fifth minute when Cliff Akurang was fouled by Aveley’s Liam Coleman, giving the referee no option but to point to the spot.

Matt Bodkin took the kick and sent the keeper the wrong way to give Thurrock the lead.

Within two minutes Aveley had levelled the score, a long looping shot saw Thurrock Keeper Deniz Mehmet scrambling back to his goal line the ball struck the bar and was then headed in by Abs Thomas.

On 26 minutes Thurrock were awarded a more controversial penalty again involving Cliff Akurang this time it looked like Cliff was impeded when trying to shoot. The penalty was again taken by Matt Bodkin, this time the keeper went the other way diving to his right and pulled of a fine save.

The penalty again spurred Aveley on and they took the lead in the 28th minute when David Knight ran into the box to head home from close range.

In the second half Aveley changed a number of players and still maintained a good momentum putting Thurrock under constant pressure at times.

On 53 minutes Aveley were awarded a free kick some 22 yards from goal, David Knight lined up his shot and managed to flight the ball over the wall and straight into the net to make it 3-1.

Both side were now creating more chances as the game flowed end to end and it was Thurrock who were next on target. The move started well with Bradley Warner and Alfie Ween out wide on the left flank, when the cross came in it found Michael Bakare who weaved past one defender before shooting past the keeper for his first goal for Thurrock.

Aveley should have extended their lead on 73 minutes when they were awarded a penalty, Billy Hunt stepped up to take it but Deniz Mehmet was able to save low down to his left.

This was Thurrock’s last friendly as their league season starts next Saturday 14th August with the visit of St Albans City. Aveley have two more pre season games before they open their league season on 21st August when they travel to Horsham.
