IT WAS only a few years ago that this local derby would have been against two teams in the same division. Last night, it was important to remember that this was a League One’s reserve outfit against a team five leagues below them.

In the first half, Grays were never able to find their feet but playing a virtual 4-2-4 in the first half it was no wonder why as they were steamrollered in midfield.

Having said that, these are the games to try things out and it was clear that the performance in the second half will have lifted the spirits of the whole team and certainly make them excited for the first run out of the season against Harlow Town on Saturday.

There was enough shape, energy, invention and movement with Duran Reynolds leadership, David Cowley’s industry and Alex Osborn’s sheer class that, with stability could be a force in the division.

Having said that Harlow were “extremely physical” in their draw against Aveley on saturday and some of the Blues diminutive players could be in for a bruising battle.
