Thurrock v Dartford
Tomorrow’s “Under The Shadow Of The Bridge” derby may be the make or break match in Thurrock’s season. It may be early September and this may be putting pressure on Hakan but with no wins so far and Thurrock now sitting third from bottom, a decision may well have to be made, sooner rather than later.
By all accounts, last Saturday’s hammering at the hands of fellow strugglers Havant was a new low. Most observers felt Thurrock could have easily lost by a landslide. The team just look a little bit lost.
The players are kind enough to blame themselves but somewhere along the line, Hakan’s tactics and guidance seem to be mis-firing. The team look like a group lost in the jungle without a map.
It is a conucndrum. Hakan took the team down two seasons ago but they were reprieved. Six months later, after a victory against Woking, Thurrock were sitting second in the league.
The big decision will come with Chairman Tommy South. You had the feeling that last year, Tommy was in many ways relieved that the team did not win promotion as the club could not afford all that came with Blue Square Premier status. The question is now: Can Tommy afford to see the club go down? A harsh decision made in September may prevent heartache in April. At the same time, Hakan got them out of a pickle before and he may do again.
With ex-Grays boss Tim O’Shea having just left troubled Croydon Athletic, there are candidates lining up on the horizon.
If the Dartford fans cross over the bridge after a resounding victory, they won’t mind paying the toll but the bell might toll for Hakan.
