Thurrock’s Tory MP slams Chancellor over Dartford Crossing

THE QUESTION of the tolls on the Dartford Crossing had been one of the first issues Thurrock MP Jackie Doyle Price had made a stand on when she came to power on May 6th.

Now it appears that the economic rug has been pulled from under the tyro Tory as the Chancellor George Osborne announced that there will be a 66% increase on the toll by 2012.

She said: I am very angry about these increases. Our local road network is not able to deal with the volume of traffic using the crossing. I don’t think it acceptable to increase charges until the issues of capacity have been addressed-this amounts to a queue tax not a toll.

“I will be challenging the minister at every opportunity.

“The government will have to consult on the proposed increases and I will be vigorous in fighting them. Please send me your horror stories about the length of time you have sat in queues. I am also very interested in building up a picture of how much the congestion is costing business. I will be building up a strong case so that Ministers have to justify this.

“I am advised however that the residents discount will stay.”
