Corringham is to get its very own taste of London 2012, thanks to the installation of an adiZone – a giant multi-sport outdoor gym venue which aims to inspire the local community to get involved in sport.
Planning permission for the scheme was granted on Thursday (21 October) evening.
adiZones, designed and developed by adidas — the Official Sportswear Partner of the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games — are permanent installations measuring 625sq metres and include sporting facilities inspired by Olympic and Paralympic sports.
These include a basketball, football and tennis area, a climbing wall, an outdoor gym and an open area to encourage dance, aerobics and gymnastics
Free to use, and open 365 days a year, work on building the adiZone in Corringham Town Park will start next month.
The adiZone will serve local communities as a space where young people can meet socially while being encouraged to play sports. Local coaches and sports club organisers will be invited to attend the site, to spot talent and encourage young people to join local clubs and sporting organisations.
Christine Ohuruogu, 400 metres Olympic Gold medalist, officially opened the site at Tower Hamlets and said: “The adiZones are wonderful spaces where young people can meet up, hang out and get involved in sport. Growing up around here, I know that the adiZones will be a really welcome and needed addition to the local community.”
