The Norwegian midfielder drilled in a low shot in the second half – and two minutes later Jeremy Helan’s cross was turned into his own net by Winston Reid to double the lead.

Frank Nouble headed West Ham back in to it but City held on to win 2-1 and move within a point of joint leaders Wigan and Newcastle, with games in hand.

THE City youth team will play Ajax next week in a pilot fixture for a planned new European youth tournament modelled on the Champions League.

The young Blues will play in Amsterdam on November 12, and the tournament proper is due to start next season.
