MP joins in with Chanukah celebrations

Sunday 5th December may have been just a typical frosty winter’s day for many, but for the congregation of Shenfield, Brentwood and Districts Synagogue (a.k.a Rosh Tikvah) in Brentwood, there was much to celebrate. Not only did December 5th mark the first anniversary of this new Jewish community, but it also allowed members and friends to rejoice in the achievement of purchasing its own Sefer Torah Scroll.

This is no mean feat, especially in today’s difficult economic climate and it is a true testament to the commitment of Rosh Tikvah’s members, that within just one year, they have purchased a Sefer Torah and even had an ark built to hold it.

Eric Pickles MP, along with Mrs Pickles, Rabbi Danny Rich (Chief Executive of Liberal Judaism) and many friends from the local and wider community, all trekked through the snow and ice to join with Rosh Tikvah on this momentous occasion. Rabbi Danny Rich, along with the synagogue’s Chair, Natasha Radford, led the proceedings, with a physical procession of the scroll, followed by a short service about Chanukah.

The children of Rosh Tikvah Cheder finished the service with some beautiful Chanukah songs, before everyone was left to enjoy each other’s company and, of course, eat!

It was very fitting for the community to come together at this time of year, when Jews all over the world are celebrating the message which Chanukah brings, that of freedom.

Within the community of Brentwood, Rosh Tikvah is steadily growing and rejoices in the freedom that it has to do so.
