The Lakeside Hammers promotional duo of Stuart Douglas and Jon Cook were celebrating this afternoon after winning the BBC London Outstanding Contribution to London Sport Award 2010.
The pair who are now entering their fifth year together at the Arena-Essex Raceway venue were recognised for the huge strides the Club has taken both on and off the track with the Hammers now firmly established as one of the top teams in the Country.
A clearly delighted Jon Cook was quick to praise the Hammers fans and backroom staff for making this award possible.
Cook stated: “We are truly honoured to be recognised by the BBC and it’s a win for the positive manner in which we and all those helpers have promoted and rebuilt the Club and in particular the way our fans have embraced this new era for the Club and have actively encouraged new followers to the cause. Our thanks go to all those at BBC London who have been very supportive in the level and quality of their coverage for the only remaining Speedway venue within the greater Capital”.
For avid Arsenal FC fan Douglas, who was unable to attend due to filming commitments, the award was particularly pleasing as the 2009 winner was Arsene Wenger. Douglas said: “It’s an incredible honour for the Club and for Speedway itself. London has a rich history in the Sport and to have our efforts to keep Speedway alive for fans in London and the surrounding area acknowledged by BBC Radio London and its listeners is humbling. I am extremely grateful to all those responsible for this prestigious award”.
The Hammers promotional duo will enjoy the moment before embarking on the task of completing team plans for 2011 with the Hammers 1-7 unlikely to be named until the New Year.
