Essex Euro MP Richard Howitt has spoken out against a Thames Estuary Airport after London mayor Boris Johnson put the issue back on the agenda as he backed a report calling for a new south-east England airport.

Labour’s Richard Howitt MEP said:

“At Eton Boris Johnson picked up the nickname ‘the Berserker’. Today we see he still believes in his pet project of a berserk Thames Estuary Airport.

“I have spoken out about these proposals in the European Parliament and I will continue to pressure Boris Johnson to withdraw these environmentally-damaging proposals.

“The environmental fall-out of building the airport, including the harm to our quality of life in South Essex, far outweighs the commercial benefits of proceeding.

“I would urge local people to protest strongly to the mayor. He has opposed the expansion of London airports – but he is happy to promote one in Essex where he has no jurisdiction. Why should Essex people suffer the noise, pollution and disruption?

“The berserk plans would also cost a fortune. Constructing a floating island airport would add £3.5billion to building costs. I also question if an airport located on an artificial island makes any sense in a world where sea levels are rising.”
