THE CALL for Chafford Hundred residents to work as volunteers at the local library seems to have fallen on deaf ears.
Last year, portfolio holder for libraries and cultural services, cllr Lynn Worrall announced that the Chafford Hundred library would see its hours cuts. But at the same time, she laid down a challenge to the six Conservative councillors that represent the ward to put their Big Society to use and man the desks with volunteers.
At Wednesday night’s full council meeting, cllr Worrall announced the results of the challenge.
Cllr Worrall said: “In the months since we laid down the challenge to the Tories, not one person has come forward to work as a volunteer.
“We remain committed to the looking at ways to help our libraries. We did ask our Conservative colleagues to help but it seems they haven’t been able to find any volunteers.
“But the door hasn’t closed and should volunteers be forthcoming, we will of course welcome them.”
