Year Six pupils from Graham James, Abbots Hall and Stanford-le-Hope primary schools were invited to spend a day using the science lab facilities at Hassenbrook School in Hassenbrook Road, Stanford-le-Hope.
Mrs Bialek, 2 i/c Science said: ‘As a Technology College we are delighted to build on the special relationships forged with local Primary Schools by inviting Year Six pupils on this occasion to a ‘Dr Evil’s Revenge’ themed day as part of the schools programme for gifted and talented pupils.’
Pupils took part in a range of activities designed to stimulate and enhance their understanding of Science. Working in teams alongside Hassenbrook students the task was to find the whereabouts of a renowned enemy of Great Britain, previously having been foiled by British Intelligence, Dr Evil returns to seek revenge. A ransom note was received by ‘secret agents’ stating that his target was the Houses of Parliament.
The scene was set and the teams of special agents embarked on various problem solving activities. Deciphering the note required code-breaking skills and trying to identify Dr Evil’s hiding place tested their mathematical and geography skills. Forensic science activities and tests followed involving chromatography and UV lights to study the evidence to hand.
The ‘Bond-like’ theme captured the pupil’s imagination and provided a thought provoking day as they explored the world of espionage. Fortunately the secret agents efforts were a success and saved Britain!
