About 450 jobs are to go as part of £98m budget cuts approved by Essex County Council.

The full meeting of the Conservative-controlled authority, which backed a £2.1bn budget, also agreed to freeze its part of the council tax.

The budget follows a £40m reduction in the government’s grant to the council reports the BBC.

The home to school transport budget is being cut by £4.7m, the recycling waste budget by £1.3m and the libraries budget by £1.9m.

The libraries cut will be achieved through changes to opening times and the mobile library service.

The council has pledged not to close any libraries.

It said it would save £50m from back office and procurement processes during the next financial year.

The council has also said it will promote sustainable economic growth by investing at least £1m to help Essex firms create jobs and take advantage of new market opportunities.

The authority at present employs more than 9,000 people excluding teachers and education workers which would take the total to about 38,000.
