Wildlife habitat areas mooted by council

Thurrock Council is seeking people’s opinions about creating “wildlife habitat areas” — or bio-diversity sites around the borough.

These are strips or blocks of land that help wildlife species move between different areas of their natural habitat or provide a place for wildlife and plants to thrive.

In these new corridors and areas, animals and natural plants would be left to flourish, but the land would still be managed and taken care of by the council to ensure the areas work for residents as well as wildlife.

The areas can be of any size or shape and the council will make sure the areas are both practicable and sustainable.

Cllr Val Morris-Cook, Thurrock’s portfolio holder for Environment, said: “We want to know what you think about the idea and if you have any ideas where and how these simple ‘wild’ areas could be introduced into our parks, open spaces and on other council-owned land.”

She added: “I won’t hide the fact that this initiative will help save money, but it seems to me like a great idea — a win-win proposal.”

The council’s consultation is online and can be reached by logging on to its website (www.thurrock.gov.uk) and Consultations via the A-to-Z panel. It runs until the end of April.
