Purfleet Celebrate the 75th Anniversary of the Spitfire
By Lucy Chipperfield
Purfleet Heritage Centre held an extra special exhibition last weekend to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the iconic British aircraft; the Spitfire.
Designed by Reginald Joseph Mitchell, the Spitfire was a revolutionary aircraft of its time. Its sleek and stable aerodynamic design enabled the Spitfire to fly at speeds no other aircraft had been able to before.
Due to the Spitfire’s phenomenal speed, it was able to quickly whizz into action in times of defence against enemy bombers. The Spitfire’s remarkable design and proven performance propelled the Spitfire to become the backbone of the RAF Fighter Command.
As expected the Spitfire quickly became a much loved and respected aircraft, which is why its 75th anniversary was an incredibly prestigious event.
The celebratory exhibition of the Spitfire is still on show every Sunday and Thursday from March 6th – 27th 2011 at the Purfleet Heritage Centre. This truly is a remarkable exhibit and one which should not be missed.
