CONSERVATIVE councillors for Stanford East and Homesteads wards have handed over the detailed results of a public consultation on safety in Southend Road, Stanford-le-Hope, along with a call for action to end the long running problems experienced by local residents.

Cllrs Phil Anderson (Stanford East and Corringham Town) and James Halden (Homesteads) met today with cabinet member Yash Gupta and officers from the highways department to reveal the results of a public consultation held over the past month.

“We were able to show the council exactly where the problems are, and offer some great suggestions from local people about how they might be tackled.”

The Councillors have submitted a formal request for the council to look at the following areas:
· Reducing the speed of traffic between First Avenue and Third Avenue;
· Safety improvements through the series of blind bends passing Golding Crescent;
· Parking restrictions around the junction with Nursery Road;
· Better pedestrian crossing facilities at several points along Southend Road.

Cllr Anderson said “all these problems are interconnected, so it’s important that we find a joined-up solution to them. There will always be pros and cons, so I am keen to see that residents are consulted properly again before any final decisions are made.”

  1. I am sure that every councillor or forum or community group or even indiviual resident would love to meet Cllr Gupta and give him a wish list to stop speeding cars arrange better parking and put in more crossing facilities in every ward across the borough. All communities need to be consulted not just the area they have identified. These problems are not unique they are mirrored all over Thurrock.

    Just reading in the local press over the last few months there are massive problems with illegal parking opposite Thurrock Community hospital this is blighting the lives of residents there.

    Only this weekend on Your Thurrock there was a report about yet another major accident on the Marshfoot road in Grays this is a notorious blackspot and for years has needed to have measures put in to stop it. As you drive along past the junction that leads you into Tilbury or onto the dock arterial road there is always without fail glass from yet another collision.

    Try to get to drive past a school or even worse cross a road in the morning or afternoon and you will be taking your life in your hands as parents park to take the children to school, too bad if you want to get on or off your drive at this time.

    I dont disagree with the point they are making they probably do need the measures they are requesting but so do lots of other places.

    What Thrurock needs is a proper plan agreed by all relevant organisations and fully consulted on (maybe just maybe they already have this i dont know) with the residents. once established the plan is followed by the rule and not just a who has access to cabinet members and who shouts loudest gets.

  2. why spend money on looking into why the accidents happen, its been very clear for many years as to why .
    cars that park of the side of the road outside the flats on southend road. this makes all the cars move over into the path of oncoming traffic.

    we dont need speed bumps we dont need the road made wider. all we need it better curbs as they are steep this makes drivers worry about hit the curbs when other cars move over from the parked cars.

    so to fix this
    1. no parking on the road from Abbots Drive turning on the aroundabout to the turning with spring houe road.

    2. better curbs as most of them lean into the road.
