THE first council housing development in over a decade is set to go ahead following approval by Thurrock Council’s Cabinet on Wednesday (16 March).
The new social housing rented development scheme will see the demolition of existing garages at Oxwich Close, Corringham, and the development of 16 one- and two-bedroom flats with associated landscaping works.
The scheme —originally given approval in 2009 — has now been able to progress as funds from the council’s Housing Revenue Account (the council’s budget for housing) has been identified for its use.
The cost of the development is £1.8million and work will begin by the end of this month (March 2011).
East Thames Group has been appointed as the development agent for the scheme, which will see an end to an area that attracted anti-social behaviour,at the same time as improving its appearance and contributing to the regeneration of the neighbourhood.
Cllr Andy Smith, the council’s cabinet member with responsibility for housing, said: “I’m delighted to be delivering the first council housing development in the borough in over a decade, providing much needed social housing accommodation.
“The development will enhance the local area and be the start of a much needed council housing programme across the borough.”
