THE REBUILDING for the new season may have to start here as Grays went down to their second defeat in four days, 2-1 against Brentwood Town.
The critics should not be too harsh here as Brentwood are the form team in the league and this was their seventh win in a row.
Brentwood hustle and work very hard. They are the team you would least like to play in a play off.
Julian Dicks criticised his team for a lack of aggression and he was right. They tried but you are starting to wonder if these lads are just too nice!
Grays went a goal up after seven minutes when Marvin Samuel nipped in at six yards to put a glancing header beyond the Town goalie.
Brentwood looked strong and it did seem just a matter of time before they equalised. Brentwood forced a corner in the 30th minute. The ball went into the heart of the area but Blewitt rose high to force the ball into the back of the net.
Blewitt nearly scored again soon after and you did fear that the floodgates would open. Blewitt, Yao and Edgar all had good chances but Grays managed to stem the flow going in at the break.
Grays looked threatening without being really dangerous. Jared Small looked classy but sometimes he seems to flatter to deceive. Jason Fontaine continued to look like an impact player that shrinks over 90 minutes.
The second Brentwood goal had Julian tearing out his proverbial hair. Another corner and Danny Dafter, totally unmarked headed the ball home.
The rest of the second half ran its course. To be fair to the Blues many thought they would have lost 4-1 or worse but they stuck to their game and without any gilt edged chances could have sneaked a point. Jared Small broke free and should have scored but hit the ball at the keeper.
Boss Julian Dicks was clearly far from happy and must find it frustrating that his team are not able to physically boss the opposition.
