The petition reads:
“WE the residents and councillors of Chafford Hundred object to the proposal to remove the weight limit from Devonshire Road.
The weight limit has only been in place for 2 years and it was put in place to protect residents lives and properties.
We think the proposal is a waste of tax payers money as a full consultation about this was undertaken 2 years ago before the weight limit was installed.
The Council has not explained the rationale behind this new consultation so soon after the previous one. The Council is yet to produce any police stats or traffic delay figures to evidence the reason for the new consultation.
It therefore leads to one conclusion, that the aim is politically driven and we strongly object to tax payers money being wasted for political gain.
We object to the proposal and to the absolute waste of tax payers money.

Here we go again another campaign against all them nasty lorries that take our goods to the shops and pertol to our petrol stations ect.
The road was originally planed as part of a ring road designed to take lorries off of london road ,yes london road where residents are up in arms about lorries using that road as well and they have more of a case than devonshire road simply due to the fact that their houses actually face the main road and some of them only a few feet away from the road and oh yes the schools and zebra crossings and shops on london road .
What does devonshire road have? Nothing nothing at all apart from a road junction no crossings for people to use as there is nothing on the other side of the road to cross to and any houses that are anywhere near the road have a nice big gap between them and the road .
This is a case of nimby’ism .
Just look over the other side of the road and you will see massive tanks containing petrol which goes out to petrol stations and an industrial estate.
So it’s ok for the petrol tankers to pass within feet of someones front door along school route that parents and children take but not ok to go down devonshire road where it will be a lot safer .

this petition is more concerned with snobbery than safety.
I agree with mgriffiths on this. This road resembles thousands upon thousands of roads across the whole country. We all want to go shopping and see the shelves full with the goods we want to buy yet nobody wants the lorry to be on a road near them.
How do the councillors who propose this petition think the shops will get their goods delivered if not by lorry. Bet they all drive cars and expect the local supermarket to have fuel as and when they need it. How do they think it got there, horse and cart? Dont answer that.
The Tories have tied themselves up on this issue. It was Earnshaw Palmer, the Liberal Democrat Councillor who first opposed lorry traffic on this road and the issue was hijacked by the local tories to try and score some political point off Earnshaw Palmer. Any sane person can see that this road is ideal to take the lorry traffic away from London Road, but sanity and Chafford Tories aren’t two words most people would put together.
