Thurrock Council won a series of prizes — including a first — at the RHS Great London Plant Fair in Vincent Square, London.
The event — which was open to the public on Tuesday and Wednesday (29 and 30 March) — had displays from some of the best British and international nurseries with quality horticultural products. Two Horticultural Halls were awash with blossom and bursting with colourful spring bulbs.
The council’s horticultural team examined the borough’s shrub and tree stocks before spending Monday morning selecting varieties to fit into five classes of the competition for Ornamental Plants.
Thurrock’s entries were up against some of the country’s top arboretums and exhibitors and attracted great interest from judges, guests and the public in general.
In the Tree or Shrub in Bloom section, Thurrock entries won second, third and fourth places; in a Tree or Shrub Shown for its Spring Foliage there was a second; a Conifer Shown for its Cones also brought a second and a Vase of Bulbs in Bloom secured a fourth place.
But top of the list was in the Conifer Shown for its Foliage section where a cutting from the Cedrus deodara outside Blackshots Civic Hall and pool beat off all competition.
