Welling United 1 Thurrock 1

Blue Square Bet South

Bill Robinson reports from Park View Road……..

Perhaps one of the most important games in Thurrock’s 25 year history was played out here today in front of 753 fans the majority hoping for a home win but the more vocal minority hoping for a change in fortune for the Fleet and three invaluable points.

The opening exchanges were dominated by the home side and on two occasions keeper Joe Woolley had to pull off a fine save from efforts from Andy Pugh and even better one from Louis Fazakerley to keep the score blank.

In the latter stages of the first half Thurrock started to create chances first Lee Boylan had a close range shot deflected over the bar for a corner. Joao Carlos took the corner which was driven in to the near post where Dean Cracknell headed the ball only to see his effort headed off the line.

The game continued to flow end to end and on 32 minutes Woolley once again pulled off a tremendous save diving to his right to save one handed a shot from Andy Pugh.

HT 0-0

The game continued to ebb and flow with neither side being dominant and fewer chances being created. Thurrock looked dangerous on the break but they just failed to deliver the final ball.

The game took a turn in the 71st minute when Chris Bush was adjudged to have fouled  Jamie Day direct from a free kick.

Disappointingly on 82 mins Jacob Pringle sent off after challenge with Lee Clarke that resulted in some pushing between the two players resulting in a red for Pringle and a yellow for Clarke.

Down to ten men Thurrock still pushed forward and won a free kick some 30 yards out as the ball was sent in the referee awarded a penalty kick to Thurrock. Lee Boylan stepped up to take the kick and blasted the ball home to even up the score.

A frenetic last 5 minutes saw the game finally come to an end with the points being shared.
