Lakeside Swim-fest set for Sunday

Serpentine club member Silvina Cives’ goal of shaving 5 minutes off her 1500 metre open water swim time has moved a step closer having won the SwimFesT 2011 Series prize draw and becoming the proud owner of a brand new Speedo wetsuit ahead of the first event in the series taking place at Lakeside Shopping Centre over the Bank Holiday weekend (29th May).

A delighted Silvina, who started swimming with SwimforTri and moved on to triathlon, is now in her third season competing at Olympic distance. “I never win anything so this is completely unexpected” she said, “I competed in the first SwimFesT last September and am looking forward to taking part again in what was a very professional, well organised event ”

SwimFesT, the spectator-friendly open water race series, is hosted by Lakeside Shopping Centre, Essex, and held in partnership with Decathlon, the world’s biggest sports retail chain supplying equipment and clothing for over 70 different sports.

Following a successful launch event last September at Lakeside, Europe’s largest shopping complex, coaching and swim technique specialist SwimforTri (SFT) and multisport event consultancy Triathlon Racing Inc (TRI) have expanded SwimFesT to a season series with dates confirmed as 29th May (Spring), 17th July (Summer) and 18th September (Autumn). A 3.8K distance option has been added to the 5K endurance event and both are proving popular alongside the shorter 1500m and 750m races. Children’s races and sprint relays go to make the series a unique festival of open water swimming.

Dan Bullock, SwimforTri and a Speedo Advisory Coach said “If you’re looking for a top quality open water swim event in safe waters the SwimFesT Series is it. We are providing as close to an elite race as you can get with ‘swim under’ electronic timing, easily accessible feed stations with energy products provided by our sponsors Decathlon and Powerbar, full paramedic cover, huge hi-viz marker buoys and great prizes for all age groups”.

Coaching and course familiarisation sessions for entrants of the SwimFesT series and the Lakeside Triathlon are offered at Lakeside throughout the season, together with regular fitness sessions for other swimmers or triathletes just looking for an opportunity to train in open water with the benefit of excellent facilities. The next session is planned for 5 June.
