ROYAL Opera House Education in Thurrock will be offering a variety of special events in July as part of the first Thurrock International Celebration of Culture. Visitors to the High House Production Park in Purfleet can enjoy a free screening of Cinderella or tour the Bob and Tamar Manoukian Production Workshop, take part in a drumming workshop or join the Thurrock Community Chorus for a summer concert.
On Wednesday 13 July at 7.30pm, the BP Summer Big Screen programme will bring a live transmission of Cinderella directly from Covent Garden to the orchard at the High House Production Park. This free event is a must for opera lovers. Bring a picnic and a rug and warm clothes, just in case!
The Royal Opera House Bob and Tamar Manoukian Production Workshop is home to the scenic painters, scenic carpenters, metalworkers and other skilled craftspeople who create the sets and scenery for the productions at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden. Visitors will be able to discover the range and wealth of skills that are needed to produce the sets for the Royal Opera House’s world-class ballets and operas on tours of the building. Tours will be free but numbers will be limited so booking is essential. There will be four tours during the day at 10.30am, 12 noon, 2.30pm and 4pm.
For those who want to make music, there will be a free African drumming workshop taking place on Sunday 17 July for families – anyone over the age of eight is welcome to attend. No prior musical experience is necessary as a professional musician and workshop leader will teach participants an African drum piece that will then be performed in the evening as part of a special evening concert. The workshop runs from 1.30pm until 4pm with the rehearsal for the concert from 4.45pm – 6pm. Places for this workshop are limited and booking is essential.
The weekend’s activities will culminate with the Royal Opera House Thurrock Summer Concert at 7pm on Sunday 17 July. The concert will feature the newly formed Royal Opera House Thurrock Community Chorus, the Thurrock Youth Orchestra, the Royal Opera House Thurrock Community Dance Company, members of the Orchestra of the Royal Opera House and Royal Opera House soloists. The programme will feature a selection of opera extracts including pieces from Bizet’s Carmen and Mozart’s The Marriage of Figaro. The concert will take place in the festival tent in the walled gardens of High House Production Park. The audience is invited to bring blankets or chairs to sit on. Tickets are £1 and can be purchased from the Thameside box office on 0845 300 5264.
